Hoodia gordonii, a stem succulent is a genus of 13 species. Although similar to the cactus family, hoodia is not related. Hoodia gordonii has fleshy-colored flowers, which has a distinctive smell to attract flies for pollination. The plant can grow up to about 1 meter in height. Hoodia gordonii is a protected species and the demand for it has exploded since the discovering of it's hunger suppressant properties. Hoodia gordonii is listed in Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

To meet the demand, numerous agricultural projects had been launched to ensure availability for the growing Hoodia market. However, this process is very time consuming and the potency of the plant also comes with a certain age of maturity. Like most other species on the list of Endangered species, there are rules, regulations and certain certifications which comply for cultivation and harvesting of Hoodia gordonii.
